I am deeply indebted to the scholar community as I have learned a lot through my journey here in Singapore under the A*Star Scholarship. As such, I want to give back to the scholar community, especially to the juniors who also aspire to venture abroad. Hence, I am fortunate enough to serve as the Vice-president of the JC ExCo - by scholars, for scholars. Together, the twelve of us coordinate with the teachers to organise meaningful bonding and transitioning events for scholars.

As a Vice-president, I learn to lead the department-in-charge - publicity with passion and compassion along with supporting the rest of the ExCo in the overall decision-making. Design has been my personal interest and strength, however cultivating this soul in the design, especially of other members, is not easy. Through a long process of knowing each other, I learn to convey my intangible points into tangible actions that are clear to the members. I also learn to respect the art taste of others and the tactful communication of ideas. Most importantly, JC ExCo provides me with opportunity to pay back in different ways to different people: Farewell Event for the seniors, Mentorship Programme for my batch and Orientation for the juniors. This builds my appreciation of the relationships and life that I have.

TOMUN

Entertaining the art of reading about current affairs, I perceive Model United Nations as a potential playground for me to brush up on my social knowledge and be more open-minded towards different perspectives. Joining Tran Dai Nghia Model United Nations (TOMUN), a MUN at my alma mater in Vietnam, I am the Vice-head of Publicity who is in charge of creating and refining contents in the social media posts. Various events like Workshops and MUN Conferences are conducted by the team to ignite the youth's interests in global issues and bond different people together. MUN has horn my public speaking skills, spirit of amity in negotiation and critical thinking. Besides, as the leader of Content sub-department, I always stress on providing a listening ear to every member's thoughts and giving words of encouragement to my sub-department.

Think Singapore

Believing in the power of education to change and enhance life, I love to inspire others through learning and equal learning opportunities. Hence, after having the privilege of receiving the prestigious A*STAR Scholarship to CHIJ Secondary School, I want to share my resources and experiences with other inquisitive Vietnamese students that want to venture abroad, especially those who do not have the conditions to study. Hence, I signed myself up as the English and Math Mentor for the ThinkSingapore Mentorship Programme and conducted online lessons every week in June 2023. In the end, there were more than 10 out of 20+ got admitted. I am not proud myself to be a teacher but more of a mentor as I love to guide my juniors through the way and inspire them. Indeed, I received great satisfaction as I had spread the joy of learning to people beyond boundaries.

Values-in-action Council

I am fortunate to serve Hwa Chong as a Values-in-action Councillor. Particularly, I get to work with different student-led service learning projects within the school to guide their directions and proposals. This gives me invaluable opportunities to be in touch with the needs of different demographics and beneficiaries across Singapore. Moreover, as a Website IC, I learn to make the service learning journey more accessible and organised through a all-got-to website that contains all the reference documents for the projects. I hence realise how important technological tools are in passing on the spirit of giving.

Beside facilitating student projects, VIAC volunteer weekly at a senior home to lighten up the elderly's day. Through activities that bring back nostalgia, I learn to connect to the Singaporean elderly on a sustained basis, learning to communicate not with my mother tongue but rather through basic Chinese and gesture language. Truly, service transcends beyond generations and abilities. Moreover, VIAC, as a Council, serves the school through the organisation and planning of Batch Projects. Through a wide range of 3 beneficiary types (youth, elderly and intellectually disabled), I learn to liase with different stakeholders and the nuances and specific needs of each.

Charity

Seeing smile appear on people's face is the greatest happiness I am bestowed with. At a young age, I had a chance to join activities tohelp impoverished communities in convents organised by my church, without which my life would be unfulfilled. Imagine the genuine grin of the pop-eyed kids at the orphanage convent. Imagine the rejuvenated vim and vigor of the elderly. I definitely could not imagine any greater wealth. I had the privilege to taste this affluence during my visits to the Thi Nghe Orphanage where my churchmates conduct dance programmes and the Vincente Retirement Home with my classmates where we gave our physical contributions and mental support to the elderly. Charity certainly makes the granter and receiver feel cherished.

Being an environment and humanitarian advocate, I always remind myself to eat responsibly as there are the less fortunate who suffer hunger everyday. In 2023, inspired by the learning journey to the black soldier fly facility at Tampines, my Sec 3 Clare class initiated a VIA project which we organised collection of near-expiry-date food and donated to the Food From The Heart Organisation. Through the project, our class could clearly see how foodwaste can be recycled from farm to fork and how collective the efforts to environmental stewardship are. This was a precious opportunity in bonding the class as everyone pitched in and contributed towards the call of nature and community. Moreover, I also serve at the Soup Kitchen at Willing Hearts Singapore to provide meals to underprivileged families.
