Heal Health

Sustaining my passion for Biology and Chemistry, I founded Heal Health, a non-profit organisation since 2022 that shares contents about healthy lifestyle and raise awareness about mental and physical health.Taken inspiration from the academics I learn at school and self-discover, Heal Health is a platform for me to intrigue not only science-oriented people but a global audience to become more health-conscious. By making creative series and analogy through different media on Facebook, Instagram and Youtube, Heal Health aims to make health knowledge more comprehensible, applicable and relatable to the mass. through various health academic project series below.

Realising that healthcare doesn't just revolve around individual health but rather community health, I redefined Heal Health's mission in 2025: by youth and for youth across both Vietnam and Singapore that mainly operates on social media to connect health enthusiasts and lead the wider community to become more health-conscious and advocative of healthcare advancement in new age. Beyond academics, Heal Health expands on public health matters that are essential. Our own home-grown webpage features biweekly news updating on breakthroughs around the world, online health screening tools that make screening accessible to all and a world-map indicating top disease concerns in all regions.

Heal Health is a seamless medium for me to connect with peers beyond border, from my secondary school friends in Vietnam to friends I met in Singapore. I really enjoy each meeting planning for the fun upcoming projects of Heal Health and blending our creative juices together. Furthermore, Heal Health also bonds us youth with people of different walks of life and occupations, from medicine seniors and advisors to industry professionals and researchers. Altogether, Heal Health is under the umbrella ecosystem for healthcare advancement that I'm proud to present.

I have completed a scientific report of the skills I had accumulated at US Pharma USA. I am proud of myself to have learned more about the manufacturing process of a tablet and moreover interpersonal skills in the workspace where communication in science is extremely crucial. I learned how dynamic the work of a pharmacist is. I am proud of the colleagues at US Pharma USA for their patience and dedication. I promise to always carry the knowledge I have gained here and abroad to contribute back to the Vietnamese pharmaceutical industry and humanity worldwide. I also promise to continue my passion for healthcare and pass it on to many more generations to come.

That said, pharmaceutical industry in Vietnam is still at a budding stage, where financial resources are limited. There are little to no opportunities for drug development research that can be in clinical use and patented "Made in Vietnam". Most of the drugs are formulated from DailyMed pharmacopeia. Hence, I carry many aspirations for the industry, beyond just general medicine and antibiotics: into cancer and stem cell drugs and many other breakthroughs, building Vietnam into a R&D hub for new drugs.

Research

My research under the CenTaD programme at Hwa Chong Institution introduced me to how inorganic chemistry connects directly to healthcare. I worked on synthesizing and characterizing nickel(II) complexes with amino acid–derived reduced Schiff base ligands, modelling how metal ions coordinate with biological molecules. Nickel, though required only in trace amounts in the body, plays roles in metalloenzymes such as urease and hydrogenase in microorganisms, highlighting how transition metals can be crucial for biochemical function. Studying how metal–ligand interactions depend on structure and chemical environment helped me appreciate how similar principles underpin the design of metal-based drugs, diagnostic agents, and therapeutic compounds.

This was my first experience in hands-on research, and the long days in the lab were demanding but deeply meaningful because I understood the healthcare relevance behind the chemistry. Guided by my teacher-mentor and working alongside my groupmate, I learned to navigate the uncertainty inherent in experimental science. Crystallization was particularly challenging — results were unpredictable, forcing me to systematically adjust pH, vary precursor concentrations, and adopt advanced techniques such as solvent layering and reverse crystallization instead of simple evaporation. Midway, I briefly explored iron(II) complexes, but this taught me the importance of focus and depth over breadth in research.

Beyond technical skills in spectroscopy and crystallography, this project shaped my resilience, patience, and problem-solving mindset. It showed me that scientific progress is rarely linear, and that persistence, collaboration, and adaptability are just as important as knowledge. Most importantly, it allowed me to see chemistry as a discipline that can ultimately contribute to improving human health, giving purpose to every challenge I faced in the laboratory.

Nobel Laureate

Attending the International Science Youth Forum masterclass by Professor Joan B. Rose was a defining moment in shaping my interest in public health. Listening to a global leader in water microbiology and pathogen surveillance made me realise how closely environmental science and human health are linked. Her work on wastewater surveillance, microbial source tracking, and quantitative microbial risk assessment showed me how invisible microbial threats in water systems can be detected early and translated into policies that protect entire communities.

Professor Brian Schmidt’s keynote lecture was equally transformative but in a completely different way. As someone rooted in biology, stepping into a talk on cosmology and the accelerating universe felt far outside my comfort zone, yet it was profoundly eye-opening. Hearing a Nobel Prize–winning physicist speak about supernovae, gravitational waves, and the scale of the universe reminded me that science is a shared human pursuit to understand the unknown, whether at the level of cells or galaxies.

I was especially inspired by how her research bridges laboratory science, advanced molecular tools, and real-world implementation with government health and environmental agencies. It changed my perspective on public health from being purely clinical to being preventive and systems-based, where safeguarding water quality can reduce disease burden at the population level. This experience strengthened my desire to pursue public health, where science is not only about discovery but about protecting lives through evidence-based action.

The experience resonated deeply with my role at the forum as a leader and facilitator of Group Canopus, where I worked with students from Singapore and across different continents. Despite our diverse backgrounds and disciplines, we bonded through the same curiosity and excitement for discovery. Even though our group has since disbanded, I still think of Canopus when I see the star in the sky, a reminder that, like constellations, the connections formed through science can transcend borders and remain long after the moment has passed.

Migrant Health Screening

Volunteering in two health screening exercises for migrant workers in Kranji and Changi was one of the most meaningful service experiences I have had. I assisted with doctor triage and visual acuity testing, where I saw firsthand the common health issues many of the workers, whom we warmly call “brothers”, face. Prolonged exposure to heat, dust, and physically demanding work often manifested in skin conditions such as rashes and infections, while long working hours and limited rest contributed to eye strain and uncorrected myopia. Some also presented with blood pressure concerns, reminding me how occupational and living environments shape health risks. Being part of the screening process showed me how early detection, even through simple checks, can make a real difference before conditions worsen.

What stayed with me most was the human connection. Despite language barriers, small gestures, patience, and smiles allowed us to communicate care and reassurance. I found deep joy in serving in a role where science met compassion, and where public health functioned as a safety net for a vulnerable community. These experiences strengthened my belief that healthcare should be preventive, accessible, and continuous. As each brother only has a two health screenings a year, monitoring daily is a challenge. Hence, I aspire to see public health screening become more integrated with technology, for example, through an app that securely stores screening data and tracks changes in health indicators over time. Such systems could help detect gradual declines, monitor recovery, and ensure that workers receive timely follow-up care, making public health not just an event, but an ongoing support system.

Dengue Slayers Challenge

The Dengue Slayers Challenge opened my eyes to how persistent and complex dengue remains as a public health threat, especially in tropical Asia where dense urban living and warm climates create ideal breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes. Despite strong vector control programmes, outbreaks continue because mosquitoes adapt, breeding sites are hard to eliminate completely, and infections can spread silently before symptoms appear. Globally, dengue places a heavy burden on healthcare systems, economies, and families, particularly in lower-resource settings where surveillance and early detection may be limited. This challenge helped me see that combating dengue is not just about treatment, but about smarter prevention, monitoring, and community-level intervention.

My team’s solution aimed to complement NEA’s ovitrap strategy by adding both vector control and disease detection into one system. We designed a trap where lactic acid and hay infusion attract Aedes mosquitoes. Once inside, microwave waves immobilize them, after which they fall into a chemical solution that lyses their cells. If the mosquito carries dengue, the viral NS1 protein is released and detected by an immunoassay layer within the device. Upon detection, the system sends an alert to households and relevant authorities, enabling faster response. The detection layer is replaceable, allowing the trap to be reused sustainably. We also planned for scalability: starting with prototyping and testing with NEA at construction sites, followed by free trials and integration with the NEA Environment App, then community outreach through schools and social media, retail distribution through pharmacies to fund further R&D, and eventually international expansion to other dengue-endemic regions.

Beyond the innovation itself, the experience shaped me through mentorship from professionals across public health, engineering, and industry, who challenged us to think about feasibility, ethics, and real-world implementation. Visiting places like the Google headquarters further inspired me to see how technology, design, and data can drive large-scale impact. I learned to collaborate across disciplines, communicate ideas clearly, and stay resilient when refining our prototype. Most importantly, the challenge reinforced my commitment to public health innovation, using science and technology not only to understand disease, but to protect communities before outbreaks occur.

VNUHCM-US Stem Cell Institue

My passion for regenerative medicine comes from seeing how science can offer second chances at life. I have always been fascinated by the innovative potential of stem cells — their ability to repair, replace, and regenerate damaged tissues feels almost like rewriting the body’s own story. This field became deeply personal to me after the passing of my favourite Vietnamese comedian and People’s Artist, Chí Tài, who died from a stroke. It made me reflect on how suddenly neurological damage can take someone away, and how limited current treatments are once brain cells are lost. Learning about advances in stem cell therapy and neuroregeneration gave me hope that in the future, conditions like stroke and other neurodegenerative diseases may not mean irreversible loss, but instead the possibility of recovery through precise, biologically driven treatments.

Following science and technology developments from the VNUHCM–US Stem Cell Institute further strengthened my interest, while also showing me the responsibility that comes with such powerful technology. Professor Phạm Văn Phúc’s vision for Vietnam to become a regional leader in cell therapy highlighted both the immense potential and the existing challenges, from gaps in legal frameworks and infrastructure to the need for stronger basic research and skilled human resources. I was struck by how ethical oversight and clear regulation from health authorities are essential to ensure safety, equity, and public trust as therapies move from lab to clinic. The strategic focus on stem cells, iPSCs, gene editing, and biomaterials, alongside commercialization and collaboration between the state, scientists, and enterprises, reflects how regenerative medicine is not only a scientific pursuit but a national and global health endeavour. This inspires me to be part of a future where innovation is guided by ethics, and where regenerative medicine can transform healthcare in Vietnam and beyond.
